Skin nutrition

Healthy skin is an indicator of overall health, and adequate nutrition is essential. People who do not eat well do not look well. That’s because nutrition can help our skin age better. Nutrition can improve skin elasticity, facial wrinkling, roughness and colour, all of which lead to a better skin appearance. As well as diet, other lifestyle factors will have an impact on skin health, for instance, hydration and stress.

Diet

A healthy, balanced diet, nutritional supplements or dietary modifications might benefit the skin’s appearance and improve some skin diseases. Like all other organs in the body, the skin needs a constant supply of energy, lipids, proteins, vitamins and minerals. To do its job effectively, skin needs essential fatty acids, as well as nutrients such as vitamin E, vitamin C, zinc, selenium and magnesium, to help fight the negative effects of the sun, pollution and other environmental factors. Many people still eat a poor diet, and vitamin, mineral or protein deficiencies can lead to skin disorders – vitamin B deficiency can cause a patchy red rash, for example. In these cases, nutritional supplements may help support healthy skin, and they can also prove useful when extra nutrition is needed, such as when a wound is healing.

Hydration

Skin is unique as, unlike any other organ, we can enhance its nutrition by applying moisturizers. Therefore you should use use adequate skin moisturisers and also drink enough water to help prevent dry skin, which is associated with several skin problems such as itching and inflammation.

Stress

Several skin diseases have been linked to stress and psychological problems, so stress management is also important to maintaining a healthy skin.
